Social Media and Politics (’11-’13)

It’s hard to imagine that social media tools like Facebook and Twitter are less than a decade old. In that period, they have become mainstays for presidential campaigns and political revolutions. This class explores new social media from both theoretical and applied perspectives. How have social media changed the political landscape? Are they a democratizing force or a tool for repression? Are they really any different from what came before? These questions form the basis for our exploration of the contemporary role of social media both in American politics and for democratization movements around the world.
